This Black History Month, we’re showcasing the voices and journeys of our incredible team members who inspire us every day from Washington, DC, New York, and Las Vegas.
Honoring Heritage, Building Community: Black History Month at Swingers
At Swingers, Black History Month is a time to reflect, celebrate, and honor the incredible contributions of the Black community—both past and present. It’s also an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the talented individuals who bring our venues to life every day. This February, we’re proud to not only share stories from our team but also give back to the local community through a special partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in Washington, DC and Urban Upbound in New York City. Together, we’re raising a glass (and funds!) in support of a brighter, more inclusive future.
As part of this celebration, we’re thrilled to feature stories from some of our incredible team members. From their personal inspirations to their experiences, these interviews highlight the diversity, passion, and creativity that make our venues so special. Let’s meet the people who bring the energy and magic to Swingers every day.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I don’t believe in limiting the celebration of Black history to just the month of February, it’s a year-round celebration for me. I always support Black-owned businesses and consciously choosing to buy Black-owned. Immersing myself in Black culture through art, music, literature, and history is a daily practice that goes beyond a month of recognition.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is a time for me to reflect on and celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of those who came before me. It’s a moment to honor those who fought for equality and justice, making it possible for me to have the opportunities I enjoy today. Their sacrifices and triumphs have paved the way for progress, and recognizing their contributions inspires me to keep pushing forward and to make a positive impact in my own way.
Who is a Black figure that you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
Issa Rae inspires me because she embodies Black excellence and is a powerful symbol of Black Girl Magic. She has consistently used her platform to elevate and showcase the richness of Black culture. Always providing an authentic space for Black voices and opportunities for countless other Black artists to thrive and share their work with the world. Her determination to highlight stories and perspectives that are often overlooked in mainstream media, serves as a reminder of the power of representation and the importance of creating spaces where our talents and narratives can flourish.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I celebrate Black History Month by going to parades, gatherings, and picnics with family and friends. We like to play games together and share stories about our ancestors and what they have been through. We talk about how they handled different situations specifically how to be a good mother to your children.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
It means that you get to learn about traditions and different prominent figures in our culture. The history behind their lives and journeys, for example Martin Luther King’s experience as a child that led him to become a pastor.
Who is a Black figure that you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
Maya Angelou- she wrote Portraits – even though her childhood was rough she became an entrepreneur, and she encouraged woman to not give up and to go for their goals. She inspires me to not give up, to keep going and to go for your goals. Even if the road gets rough, just remember in your heart that you could inspire the next person with how you persevered. Nothing will be easy, like college, but at the same time it will be worth it.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I wouldn’t say I have a specific way to celebrate Black History Month. I always uplift and support my peers, and I think that’s what matters the most.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month means so much to me but if I had to put it into a few words I would say determination, hard work, and resilience in exactly that order! It means remembering all the obstacles my peers before me faced and conquered so generations to come wouldn’t have to! Remembering to keep pushing for an inclusive and equitable world in all aspects. Never forgetting everything we overcame and should continue to fight for.
Who is a Black figure that you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
A Black figure that I love is Sha’Carri Richardson. Sha’Carri is a 24-year-old Black Female Athlete who currently holds the title of the fastest woman in the world. What I love most about her is that through all the obstacles during her career, nothing has yet to stop her from knowing that she can persevere. Even after people all around the world tried to tear her down for her challenges, she still came out on top! I feel as if Sha’Carri is a great example for young Black women like myself because she has proven that no matter the picture people paint of you as long as you know who you are nothing can stop you!

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I celebrate Black History Month by actively supporting Black-owned businesses, and I believe it’s important to extend this commitment year-round. During this month, I make a special effort to exclusively patronize these businesses. Some of my favorites include Park on 14th, Busboys and Poets, Roaming Rooster, and many others that contribute so much to the community. These are just local example but there are so many more! Indulging myself in that community and encouraging others to do the same is my goal.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is an important reminder to recognize and honor the often-overlooked history and accomplishments of Black individuals. It’s a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made, while also acknowledging the work still to be done for the community. Acknowledge the black community and find a way to contribute positively.
Who is a Black figure you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
During Black History Month, I often reflect on Toussaint L’Ouverture, whose leadership during the Haitian Revolution has been a powerful source of inspiration. L’Ouverture’s courage in fighting against colonizers and freeing one of the first black nations is amazing, and his ability to unite and lead a group of people, showed me the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. His unwavering commitment to freedom and justice continues to motivate me to fight for what’s right and to support movements that seek to uplift and empower struggling communities. This reminds me that true change requires not only motivation but also unity and belief in a better future.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I don’t, I just continue the journey of my life.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
It’s a reminder that as the world turns, things are somewhat the same just a different generation.
Who is a Black figure that you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
My grandfather, Thomas Stewart Sr. My grandfather was born in 1923 so he saw and went through a lot. He taught me to stay strong-minded and think for others. Mutual respect is always given no matter who the person is.

How do you celebrate Black History Month?
I see Black History Month as a time of reflection – a time to acknowledge the steps we have taken forward in America. I started my own small business in January of last year making candy. I had a craving for a peanut butter cluster and I ended up making peanut butter chocolate truffles. I shared them with people at work and they encouraged me to sell them. I focus on presentation and that is why it has taken some time. They are called JPB’s- Jay’s Peanut Butter Balls. I have reached out to other Black business owners for ideas on how to keep expanding. It makes me think about the sacrifices made so I could be free to start my own business and create something for myself that I enjoy, and others can enjoy as well.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Reflection and acknowledgment. I think about the people who have sacrificed something for me so I can live the way I want to live.
Who is a Black figure that you remember during this month and how have they motivated/inspired you?
The Black men in my personal life and seeing how they have soldiered through hard times has put the battery in my back to take initiative for what I want and my goals. It motivates me to take care of those who are under me or sibling next to me or older family members. I think of my father and close friend of mine, Harold Hicks, who is a classically trained musician. He is blind and has been since his 20s. He works at my other job with me and kids with disabilities. His story is inspiring and it connects with pushing through trials and tribulations. It’s family that keeps me going.
While we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month, we recognize that fostering inclusion is an ongoing commitment. Embracing diversity is a practice that extends far beyond just one month.
